Sleep On It

guestbed_cropped.JPG

For our guest bedroom, we pretty much kept everything from the old place. Since we have quite a bit more room than before, we also brought in an armchair and a floor lamp (not pictured). And I'm still hoping to get a pair of ottomans/stools/small benches for the end of the bed and a small side table. But what's really stumping me is what to put on the wall behind the bed. I'm considering buying two of these Jonathan Adler mirrors, to place above each nightstand:

But I just don't know if that's the right move here.

Don't know if I like the bamboo mixed with the black wrought iron. Loved the framed otomi. I would like it over the bed (unless you live in California).

Hi Nan! My first choice for placement of the framed otomi was actually above the bed. But, even with those picture-hanging devices that are designed to deal with earthquakes, my husband thought it was a bad idea. So it was shifted to the neighboring wall. *sigh*

i don't have a great suggestion for the over the bed...sorry. you mentioned in your post having a floor lamp. i've been looking for one i like for weeks. do you have any suggestions? any you love? i have a very small place and i need this for my living room.

ps i LOVE your blog. it is one of my "must reads"

Hi Denise! We actually re-purposed a floor lamp from the living room for the guest bedroom (the only room in the house that doesn't have any recessed or track lighting). There are LOTS of lamps that I love. Feel free to shoot me an email if you want to discuss the specifics of what you're looking for.

I live in the Bay Area, too, and have also worried about having framed art hanging above the bed in the guest bedroom- here's what we finally decided: on the six or seven nights a year when someone actually *sleeps* in the bed, we take the artwork down....don't know if this works for you (you may have more frequent sleepover guests), it's just that the otomi would look so *perfect* over the bed, and I think the mirrors would look a tad silly....just my two cents. good luck!

I had the same problem with my bed, and I decided to do the wall sticker suggestion, with wall stickers from Ikea! I posted this comment before on your site too, i think. You can see the end result on my website

I think it looks great as is and agree that the mirrors idea doesn't quite work. What about a wall decal over the bed?

Samantha - That's a great idea! In the past, we rarely had overnight guests. But now that we've got more room in our house, it looks like people will be staying with us more often. Still, your solution could work. Thanks for the suggestion!

Sharon & SFDC - Since we have some wall stickers over the bed in the master, I thought I would try to do something different in the guest room. But that may be the best solution if we don't end up moving the framed otomi. (BTW, Sharon, I think your decals look awesome! I never would've guessed that they're from Ikea.)

But it sounds like the mirror idea is getting no love, so that's out. (They're a bit pricey anyway, so I'm slightly relieved about that.)

I've been wanting those mirrors for awhile now, I say go for them!

I love this bedding. Do you mind sharing where you found it?

Hi Natalie! It's an older Dwell (www.dwellshop.com) pattern. I think it was called "Trellis" and the color is butter. Unfortunately, I don't think it's available anymore.

I spent a long time living in CA, and what I would do is replace the glass in the framed otomi (what is an otomi? It's gorge!) with nonglare acrylic and then get some earthquake hooks. Voila! Shouldn't fall and if it does it will not be heavy enough to injure and will not shatter into disastrous shards.

Hi Anne!

Good to see you over here. I will have to double-check to see what is in the piece right now; I think it's glass, but replacing it with acrylic is a great idea. (And I hadn't even thought about that!) The weight of the frame itself may still be too heavy though.

The otomi is an embroidered textile that we brought back from Los Cabos last year. It's handmade by Mexican Otomi Indians. We have a larger panel (with red embroidery) draped over the back of our couch in the living room as well.

It looks great so far--love the JA mirrors.

I love the artwork where it is. Great balance between the pillow and then that same pop of color unexpectedly on the left of it. I say do a mirror over the bed, but instead, a round one. Maybe something also with a silver frame or a mirrored frame. I've seen lots of great ones lately. The silver bamboo works for me, just not the shape of the one you suggested. Plus the round will nicely complement the shape of the night stands. Nice work. Pretty room!
