Pillow Talk

Last week — hard to believe it was just a week ago! — when we were in Park City, I wandered into the fantastic Barclay Butera showroom. I had never heard of Barclay Butera before then. But now, I see that today's NYTimes Style section has a "shopping with" feature with him. One thing worth noting is his recommendations for pillows on a bed:

On the other hand, he can answer with great certainty the question that has long troubled philosopher-decorators: How many pillows should be on a bed?

“Ten.”

Permit him to explain. “Three Euros, they would be 30 inches by 30 inches, or 26 inches by 26 inches,” he said over lunch at Bergdorf Goodman, where nearby diners leaned in to eavesdrop. “Then, depending on the size of the bed, you want four standard king-sized or queen-sized for the purposes of the people in the bed.”

These would be the actual sleeping pillows?

“Yes, but the sleeping pillows still have decorative elements,” said Mr. Butera, who splits his time between Newport Beach, Calif., and Park City, Utah. “In front of those, two 18-inch-by-18-inch or some small decorative pillows and a small boudoir pillow.”

Wow. Ten. Although come to think of it — with sleeping pillows and shams and decorative pillows all counted — we have seven on our bed.

Wow I feel lame - we only have 4!

Alice - That just means you have less to move off of the bed every night! For us, only the two sleeping pillows stay put.

There are so many new styles and designs available in the market. Its moreover like fashion.

Ten sounds about right. Although I have only two European pillows, I use 6 standard pillows and 2-4 smaller ones when the bed is very well-dressed.

One thing I really hate in a bedroom is a really overloaded bed. To me, if you have to take pillows off at night, you've got too many pillows on the bed. We've got two pillows on the bed, one for each of us. More than that looks really cluttered to me.
